No this isn’t about Cockney Rhyming Slang for lies. It really is about pork pies.  So yes, I know what you’re thinking already!  Bring on the pork pies....

Pork Pies:  or...unexpected and shared joys.  Soon after I moved to my present house, I watched a garden transformation across the far side of our community green.  Newly-laid lawn, plants, pots, seating, lights, water feature – the works.  As the work progressed,  I got to know the neighbour to talk to briefly.

Eventually, I couldn’t resist, so went across to congratulate my neighbour on his new garden area, and suggested they needed a little “garden opening” party.  I offered to make cakes.  He turned to me and said that would be really kind, but only if they are gluten-free as he has coeliac disease. I paused for a moment, then gathered myself and replied “That’s ok – me too - I only ever cook gluten free!”

I learned that he has a regular delivery of gluten-free pork-pies (other pies are available too!) – and now we put in a joint order!

The unexpected shared experience will come at you when you least expect it – even in the therapy room.

In everyday life, we share that experience. That “Me too” moment.  But what would you do within the therapeutic space?  Consider carefully who your self-disclosure serves within a therapy session.  What happens to the process for the client?

Back in the outside world, the garden party was such fun, by the way!  The garden is much enjoyed in summer evenings.  And the pork pies are yummy!
